But terminating people may cause stress to the employees left behind. Employees build relationships with their colleagues then losing them for the benefit of the company causes emotional stress.

The remaining employees are in for two things. They will either be more stressed thinking about who will get laid off next or get stressed because they will share the remaining workload. Immense workload is one of the major causes of stress in the workplace. The employee may not be able to comply with the demands expected of him or her. This triggers the fight-or-flight response. Being subjected to time pressure often results to fatigue. Job stress is often the cause of occupational burnout.

Burnout is mainly characterized by exhaustion due to the draining of emotional or physical resources. It results from the disappointment of the workplace, oneself, or both. The most dedicated and motivated in their work are more likely to develop work burnout. These people have the tendency to see failure in delivering results in work as failure in life in general. This contributes to absences, tardiness, and entertaining thoughts of quitting. Occupational burnout is one of the reasons why stress is a major cause of turnover in companies.
